The beauty and the shortcomings of an old house

The old houses undoubtedly have their charm and dare to win the hearts of new owners. The history of the house, its energy are all things that grab the moment and the old house lives a new life. As beautiful as it sounds, renovating a ready-made building without the possibility of making any structural and functional changes is a real challenge, even for an experienced designer. This is exactly what we faced during the implementation of this project.

The main disadvantages of this house are the low ceilings and the lack of enough light in the space. Our main goal was to make the most of the available light and create a feeling of ethereality, which required a complete renovation. We were looking for the element that would create the much-needed harmony in a home.

To create a sense of completeness

When we entered from one room to another, we wanted this transit not to be felt, our goal was to achieve a sense of wholeness and completeness. For this purpose, we have created lattice shelves in the hallway and kitchen that can slide and let light through. There was an old fireplace in the house, which we completely transformed and adapted into the space so that it becomes an integral part of the interior, whether used daily or not. In the dining room, we bet on a very strong element – a mirrored wardrobe. It is not only a great accent in the interior, but also an element that creates a feeling of space.

Everything in its place

The slopes of the roof compensate for the low height and lack of enough light in the house. We implemented the project for one calendar year, and it took us about 6 months to reach the final project and another 6 months to implement it. We were guided by the idea of compensating for the disadvantages of the space, while at the same time creating a contemporary home in which there are no dominant things and everything can be adapted according to the current desires and moods.

The difference between a large apartment in theory and practice

Choosing a large apartment does not always mean that you will have a large space! Of course, the empty room looks huge, its area is more than impressive, but in the process of “filling” a lot of free space is suddenly exhausted. In general, this is just one of the problems – contemporary construction abounds in structural elements that can not be removed and limit the capabilities of even the largest apartments. This was exactly the case with the Apartment IM. In theory, the space is huge, in practice, however, in the center of the living room are placed some big columns that “split” it and limit its capabilities.

Our main goals were to turn all the defects of this apartment into effects, to make the most of the living space and to propose the classic style desired by the owners. The ugly truth is that in the beginning no one knows exactly what his/her apartment or house wants to look like. Therefore, many different projects and 3D visualizations are created until a balance between the possibilities of the space and the views of the owners is achieved. Specifically, for the Apartment IM, we have created 150 variations and 3D visualizations of the living room only, before proceeding to the production process. The overall realization of the Apartment IM took us 2 years, including the design and production process.

The apartment is asymmetrical. The classic style desired by the owners, in turn, is the epitome of symmetry. All of the time, while working on this apartment, we tried to distort the space in order to pull off a symmetrical look. The beautiful fireplace is designed to cover the radiator. The aim was to create the feeling that this is a real classic fireplace.

The defect becomes an effect

We turned the columns in the living room into a beautiful and functional white console, which gives an additional feeling of space. The console itself has not only an aesthetic role – it is filled with cabinets and drawers that are perfect for storing various items. In the living room, we created a specific background behind the sofas. And the beautiful tiles covered another defect of the apartment – the radiators.

Our clients wished for an exquisite contemporary interpretation of a calssic children’s room. We chose to bet on a different, non-standard shape of the mirror, which will break the classical rhythm and at the same time will look exactly in its place. We focused on such materials that enhance the classic effect and gives the feeling of comfort and beauty.

In the beginning was the creative inspiration

Determining a starting point is the beginning of our projects. A given space can have different looks. Our goal, however, is to always find a balance between beautiful appearance and functionality. When you see an interior magazine, you will undoubtedly find at least one room that you will fall in love with. You are going to love everything in it – the sofa, the lamp, the coffee table, the way they are arranged and everything else. In these photos, you can see that each element is in its place and combines perfectly with everything else. Surely, you would be happy to live in such place. There is, however, one subtle point – a beautiful photo is just a photo. In reality, it is very difficult to live in such a perfect space because it was created to be beautiful, not functional. The large space, of course, gives a lot of opportunities for the arrangement of furniture, but if you step into it, you will start to wonder where to store clothes, shoes, blankets from the sofas?

Understanding the difference between a perfect photo and reality, we offer dozens of variants of a space, looking for the perfect combination between beauty and the opportunity for a comfortable life in it. Thus, began the implementation of this project. Designing a SI apartment was a wonderful creative experience. The large areas of the living room allowed us to create two contrasting areas. Zoning was also the leading element in our approach to the creation of this home. When designing entrance area and the living space, we tried to ensure the maximum access of light to each part of the space.

The living room

In the living room we bet on the contrast. For the part that reaches natural light from the large windows, we chose to bet on a beautiful, dark wooden veneer to create a feeling of comfort and warmth in the space. For the rest of the living room, which does not reach the natural light in the required quantities, we choose a pure white color. Through it, we were able to compensate for the lack of light in this part of the space, as well as to create the feeling of more space. Of course, for its realization we also went through several project variants. One of our biggest advantages is that thanks to our own manufacturing base, we have the opportunity to make adjustments to the project until the last moment – just before the start of the production process.

The perfect balance in the bathroom

Many people underestimate the bathroom as part of the home. The truth is that this is one of the first places you are in the morning and one of the last you visit in the evening. Therefore, the interior of the bathroom is no less important than the interior of the marten or living room. Our plan for this part of the Apartment SI was to create balance, and build not just a common bathroom, but a place adaptable to the mood.

After being through many projects and considering different options, in search of optimality, we relied on natural materials and the powerful combination of stone and metal. Our goal was to recreate the feeling for balance. The space should be both energizing for the day ahead and able to make you relax and unwind in the evening.
